5 PB data on BiG Grid’s permanent data storage

Being a main partner in BiG Grid, SARA provides permanent data storage facilities to the Dutch scientific community. SARA is also a partner in the Dutch Tier-1 in the WLCG collaboration of CERN for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and provides storage for the Long Term Archiving (LTA) of LOFAR.

Data explosion in 2011

The data explosion, which started in the first months of 2011, has continued as expected. At the end of December 2011 the total data volume stored was 4.7 PetaByte. The expectation was 4.5 PetaByte.

In the first weeks of January 2012, the growth was 300 TeraByte. As a result the total data volume is now 5 PetaByte. In 2012 a comparable growth of ± 4,5 PetaByte is expected.
